Bitcoin.de is restructuring its business model following the rejection of its MiCA authorization by German regulators, a decision that compels the platform to delegate trading and custody operations to external partners.
The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) denied the application submitted by Futurum Bank AG—the operator of Bitcoin.de—to secure status as an authorized crypto-asset service provider under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.
This ruling likewise terminated the regulator’s prior tolerance of Futurum Bank’s cryptocurrency offerings, and activity on the platform has been mostly on hold since June 12.
Users retain the ability to withdraw digital assets, although trading activity and euro funding continue to be paused. Futurum Bank maintains possession of holdings until a new custodian receives them, and current account credentials and client claims stay secure.
Bitcoin Group reported that Futurum Bank submitted its MiCA application in June 2025, leaving the application status pending for upwards of 15 months.
MiCA rejection forces a structural reset
In response to BaFin’s denial, platform executives stated they had developed a contingency framework to enable a swift pivot.
Consequently, Bitcoin.de intends to maintain its operations via two regulated German financial entities, with one serving as the execution counterparty for users and the second assuming responsibility for digital asset custody. The portal will maintain its user interface, brand, and mobile application while the licensed third parties oversee the regulated duties.
This transition positions Bitcoin.de to concentrate principally on software infrastructure, marketing, and client care, leaving trade execution and safekeeping to regulated allies. Such an arrangement aims to sustain the marketplace without mandating that Futurum Bank directly execute the operations BaFin declined to license.
The enterprise, which reports a user base exceeding 1.1 million, has not disclosed the identities of the collaborators or provided an exact timeline for trading activities to recommence. Officials noted that contracts are currently being concluded and bringing back services is a primary goal.
Bitcoin Group and Futurum Bank continue to evaluate the regulatory ruling and retain the option to appeal within one month following official notice. Submitting a new licensing request is also an option.
At present, commercial urgency centers on finalizing these partner contracts before an extended trading suspension drives additional clients away. Bitcoin.de indicates that the engineering work necessary for the platform relaunch is finished, making regulatory compliance the sole remaining obstacle to reinstating full functionality.
Upcoming milestones involve announcing a resumption schedule, reopening euro funding channels, and shifting user holdings over to the incoming custodian.
