SAP Pay integrates USDC transactions via Circle Mint access

Through a collaboration with payments provider Tereina, Circle has integrated a USDC payment route into SAP Pay, allowing qualified businesses to utilize stablecoins directly within their existing SAP workflows. According to Circle’s SAP Pay page, utilizing this feature depends on regional availability and requires an institutional Circle Mint account.

The integration between Circle and Tereina—the payments company behind SAP Pay—is accessible to SAP customers, as detailed in an announcement on Oct. 7. The release notes that USDC will serve as the primary stablecoin for eligible dollar-denominated processes, while EURC is available as an option for euro-denominated transactions.

For corporate finance departments, this update introduces an alternative settlement mechanism embedded within the software they already rely on for business payments. SAP unveiled SAP Pay on Oct. 6 as an integrated service within SAP Cloud ERP designed to execute and reconcile payments automatically when invoices become due.

Circle highlights several practical applications for USDC, including cross-border vendor payments, intercompany transfers, and the settlement of accounts payable and receivable. The company states that this route operates alongside existing banking relationships, approval structures, controls, and reporting systems. To facilitate the minting, redemption, and management of USDC, Circle Mint links to the SAP stack utilizing an API.

Institutional access and regional limits

SAP clients must additionally satisfy Circle’s specific account prerequisites. Mint services are restricted strictly to institutions, barring individual applicants from eligibility. Circle’s onboarding workflow mandates identity verification, background checks, sanctions screening, and know-your-customer assessments. Circle reports that this review process typically spans anywhere from a single day to a week or more.

Publicly available regional guidelines present some discrepancies. SAP’s Connect documentation indicates that SAP Pay is broadly available across the United Kingdom and the United States. However, separate product-page terms restrict transaction processing to entities or affiliates legally based in the European Union or the United States, unless specific documentation states otherwise. It remains unclear how the UK rollout aligns with those domicile restrictions, and Circle’s own regional account stipulations apply independently.

General country-specific guidance from Circle distinguishes between regions with full fiat connectivity and those with wallet-only support. Because these classifications apply to general Mint services, the exact extent of the integration’s country-by-country coverage remains unspecified.

Traditional banking access remains an essential factor when converting between fiat dollars and USDC. Circle’s standard wire instructions mandate that an institution use an account in its own name capable of dispatching wire transfers directly to Circle’s US bank account. Furthermore, Circle notes that redemptions are not supported for accounts that require an intermediary bank to receive dollar wires.

Circle advocates the benefits of nearly instant, round-the-clock USDC settlement, pointing to potential gains in reconciliation efficiency and working capital. Nevertheless, neither the initial announcement nor the SAP Pay page discloses specific transaction volumes or calculated customer cost savings associated with the integration.

While SAP’s documentation mentions an anonymous distributor utilizing SAP Pay, it does not confirm whether that entity employs Circle’s stablecoins. That particular case study highlights general usage of the payment utility rather than adoption metrics for the new USDC channel.

Moving forward, Circle and Tereina intend to run joint customer proof-of-value initiatives in the coming months to gather adoption analytics as deployments scale. The organizations also plan to collaborate with ecosystem partners and provide specialized training for treasury and payment professionals.
